Looking at the contraception controversy through the moral panic paradigm provides insight into the current politicization of contraception.
Jock Young is credited with first using the term “moral panic.” (1) Young, a British sociologist, published 1971 a discussion of 'the moral panic over drug-taking’ and noted how the panic increased the number of arrests. (1, 2) Stanley Cohen used the term and showed the characteristics of a moral panic by examining 1960s Britain and the fights between Mods and Rockers.
